The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has announced the resumption of normal operations at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) following a temporary closure earlier in the day due to the arrival of the remains of the former Prime Minister, Raila Odinga, on Thursday morning, October 16, 2025.

In a statement issued on Thursday, KAA confirmed that all flight activities have now returned to normal and urged passengers affected by the disruption to contact their respective airlines for updated flight details and travel arrangements.

“The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) announces that Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) is now open to normal operations following the temporary closure earlier today,” read part of the press release.

KAA also expressed appreciation to travellers, airlines, and the general public for their patience and understanding during the short interruption. The authority reaffirmed its dedication to ensuring safety, security, and efficiency in all airport operations at JKIA.

“We remain committed to maintaining safe, secure, and efficient airport operations at JKIA,” said Acting Managing Director and CEO Dr Mohamud Gedi.

The brief closure temporarily halted flight schedules to facilitate the smooth procession of Raila Odinga’s body from the airport to Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, prompting KAA to coordinate closely with airlines to minimise inconvenience to passengers.

Raila’s body viewing

Meanwhile, the Government has announced a change in the venue for the public viewing of the late former Prime Minister, which was initially scheduled to take place at Parliament Buildings, will now be held at Kasarani Stadium due to an uncontrollable crowd.

In a public statement released by the ruling party, the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) on Thursday morning, the state officials urged members of the public to proceed directly to Kasarani Stadium to pay their respects. The decision follows reports of large crowds attempting to enter Parliament Buildings, which posed challenges for security personnel.

“The Government wishes to inform members of the public of a change in venue for the public viewing of the body of the late Rt. Hon. Raila Amollo Odinga,” the UDA statement read.

“The viewing will now be held at Kasarani Stadium and not at Parliament Buildings as earlier announced. Members of the public are therefore advised to proceed to Kasarani Stadium for the viewing.” It added.

Raila Odinga will be laid to rest on Sunday, October 19, 2025 at his Bondo home, Siaya County.
