Five maize flour brands supended over aflatoxin contamination

Kenya Bureau of Standards(KEBS) has suspended milling licenses of five maize flour brands after they were found to have higher levels of aflatoxin than the permitted limits.

Through a notice, KEBS also directed the respective milling companies to recall the specific brands namely; Dola, Kifaru, Starehe, 210, and Jembe from the market.

“Following continued market surveillance as well as multiple public reports, Kenya Bureau of Standards has noted that some brands of maize meal products (Unga wa Ugali) offered for sale do not meet the requirements of Kenya Standards” read the statement in parts.

The five brands were found to have aflatoxin levels that were higher than the permitted maximum limit, according to KEBS.

Dola, Kifaru, Starehe, 210 and Jembe maize meal are common brands in most stores and local shops. The five brands are manufactured by Kitui Flour Mills, Alpha Grain Limited, Pan African Millers, Kenblest Limited and Kensalrise Limited respectively.
