Venezuelans in election materials saga to know their fate tomorrow

Three Venezuelans arrested last week at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport while in possession of election materials will know their fate tomorrow.

Jose Gregorio Camargo Castellanos, Joel Gustavo Rodriguez Garcia and Salvador Javier Sosa Suarez have been asked to report at the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) for determination on whether they would be charged, deported or set free.

Sources said the government was mulling either moving to court to seek deportation order against the three or setting them free.

Sources said the Venezuelans, who have been reporting to ATPU since their release last Friday, had been asked to return yesterday.

The three  are apparently staying at a hotel in Nairobi as the Directorate of Criminal Investigations undertakes investigations into their visit in the country.

The election materials belonging to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) that they had been accused of being in possession of irregularly have since been released to the electoral agency. They were also arrested with a laptop, a personal monitor, five flash discs, one mobile phone and an assortment of personal computer accessories.

Sources say the stickers had been intended to be used for labeling Kenya Integrated Elections Management Systems (KIEMS) kits bags.

The DCI is also investigating the three for allegedly holding expired passports, a claim that their lawyers have dismissed and accused the DCI of taking a photocopy of the expired parts of the passports and ignoring the renewed section.

Seamless Limited Chief executive Abdullahi Abdi Mohamed, who is said to have invited the three in the country, recorded a statement with ATPU on Monday.
