Sonko in court to bar Kalonzo’s Wiper party from fielding gubernatorial candidate in Mombasa

Former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko has sued the Wiper Democratic party seeking orders to bar the party from nominating a candidate to run for the Mombasa gubernatorial seat.
In the matter filed before Mombasa High Court, in an exparte application, Sonko now claims that following the expiry of the 72 hours allowed by IEBC for the party to field a candidate to replace him, he was likely to suffer huge losses considering the amount of money and time he had invested in his bid to vie for Mombasa gubernatorial seat.
He has further sued the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission seeking orders to restrain the commission from printing ballot papers for the Mombasa gubernatorial position in the upcoming August 9 general elections.
Through his lawyer Jared Magolo, Sonko made the application before Justice Olga Sewe.
Justice Sewe certified the matter as urgent and issued orders to Sonko to serve the Wiper party, IEBC, and IEBC’s Dispute Resolution Committee to facilitate the hearing of the petition tomorrow.
