IEBC readies to declare new president

By , August 11, 2022

On this day five years ago, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission chairperson Wafula Chebukati was preparing to officially announce presidential results the following day.

At a press conference, Chebukati was upbeat that the commission would receive all the Forms 34A and 34B within the next 24 hours to enable him declare the winner of the hotly contested election pitting the then incumbent, Uhuru Kenyatta against the National Super Alliance candidate Raila Odinga.

Then, provisional results had shown that Uhuru had already crossed the 50 per cent plus vote mark while Raila was trailing him at 44 per cent.

International observers monitoring the election had also given IEBC a clean bill of health, terming it free, transparent and credible.

How wrong they were as barely three weeks later, Supreme Court would nullify the presidential election, saying it was not conducted according to the Constitution.
