IEBC gives 4,000 scribes nod to cover elections

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) had by yesterday accredited more than 4,000 journalists in readiness for next week’s General Election.

Commission chairman Wafula Chebukati said more journalists will be accredited to cover the event.

Chebukati said the commission will offer media access to all polling stations and a platform to report election results from the constituency, county and national tallying centre to enhance transparency and eliminate any tension caused by delayed transmission.

He said the media’s role in the election process is critical and as the watchdog, they point out breaches in the Code of Conduct upon which acts. “We will work with the Kenya Media Working Group taskforce to have media in the 290 constituencies so that they may report election results immediately it is announced,” said Chebukati (pictured).

He assured the media will be allowed access to all levels of election result announcements at constituency, county & National tallying centres.

“The Commission & the media will walk this journey together and when the media needs clarity on any information on the electoral process, they should seek input,” Chebukati assured.

He urged the media to work together with IEBC to make a difference in this country and make democracy grow.

Commission vice person Juliana Cherera said the electoral body values the media as crucial in enabling IEBC to deliver its mandate.

“IEBC is the referee, parties are the players and Office of the Registrar of Political Parties is the coach. Similarly, the media is the voice and the commission is the content. This will make the voice have the right content,” Cherera said.
