D-Day as electoral body tribunal gives verdict on Igathe, Kang’ata cases

The electoral commission’s disputes tribunal will today determine the fate of two candidates seeking governorship in the August 9 election.

Dispute Resolution Tribunal established by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), is expected to deliver its ruling on whether or not to revoke the clearance of Nairobi gubernatorial candidate Polycarp Igathe and his Murang’a counterpart Irungu Kang’ata.

The decision by the tribunal comes after hearing petitions filed challenging the duo’s eligibility to contest in August polls.

Igathe is accused of being unfit to hold public office following his resignation as Nairobi deputy governor following misunderstandings with then governor Mike Sonko. The complainant, one George Bush wants Igathe disqualified on grounds that he abdicated his official duties as the duly elected deputy governor in 2017to 2022.

Kang’ata is accused of asking the returning officer to change the date of presenting his nomination papers to enable him confirm whether his running mate-Winnie Njeri had resigned from her job at the University of Nairobi.

“He violated the law when he asked the returning officer to alter the nomination date of presentation of his candidature from June 6 to 7, 2022,” says the complainant Thomas Waithaka Mumu
