Azimio promises to settle Coast squatters, resolve land injustices
By Anthony.Mwangi, June 6, 2022The Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya Coalition has promised to address historical land injustices in the country as well as resettle thousands of squatters in the Coast region.
While promising to institute far-reaching reforms in the lands sector, the Raila Odinga-led coalition also vowed to streamline the process of acquisition and ownership of land in the country.
In the just unveiled manifesto, the coalition says should it form the next government, it will ensure that acquisition, authentication and issuance of title deeds are strictly carried out in accordance with the law.
The coalition will institute measures to prevent and eliminate corruption in land administration
Further, the team says, it will address “secure land tenure” for landless families and squatters in the Coastal region and other parts of the country through bulk acquisition and settlement of the affected families and squatters.
The coalition will also enhance efficiency in the administration of land including mapping, digitisation, and ensuring that all land records are secured.
Laws and regulations will be enforced with respect to the acquisition of land in the country.
The Azimio coalition will also enforce the implementation of national land use, spatial plans and policy by both national and county governments
According to the manifesto, the land was at the centre of the struggle for independence and continues to be a source of strife and conflict.
“Land is a national heritage, an important resource for settlement of communities and a critical factor of production. Productive, inclusive and sustainable use of land will spur shared prosperity,” reads the document.
The coalition is promising to address the land issues in the Constitution of Kenya 2010 and continue with the ongoing digitalisation of land records and operations at the Ministry of Lands.
It will create a conducive environment for reform of policies, laws, institutions and regulatory frameworks in the land sector.
