Controversial social media personality Scophine Aoko Otieno is set to appear in court this morning following her arrest and detention on Friday over a series of inflammatory posts on her online platforms.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Aoko will be charged with publishing false information on social media.

Her arrest has ignited a wave of public outcry, with the hashtag #FreeAoko trending (with over 35,000 posts) as a majority of people demand her release.

Police reportedly stormed Aoko’s residence, seizing her phones and laptop before taking her to the DCI headquarters for questioning.

Aoko’s lawyer, Cliff Ombeta, initially reported that she was denied access to legal representation, a claim that has further fueled public anger.

“They have finally allowed my colleague to see her. I have also spoken to her. Thanks, Ivy Ateko, for attending to Aoko Otieno; at least we know she is okay,” Ombeta noted, confirming that legal access had eventually been granted, though without revealing the exact charges.

Some of Aoko’s posts on her X (formerly Twitter) account were deleted in the wake of her arrest.
