Kirinyaga governor Anne Waiguru has on Sunday October 17, 2021 explained why Mount Kenya youths overwhelmingly support Deputy President William Ruto.

Waiguru, who was speaking in an exclusive interview with a local daily, stated that the second-in-command has pitched tent in the region for the last four years, endearing himself to the young generation.

The ex-Devolution minister posits that Ruto’s numerous visits won him the hearts of the youths, when his prospective opponents focused on selling the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) and the Handshake.

“The reason Ruto is very popular in Mt Kenya is that he connects with the youth. Ruto has been present in the region for the last four years when those other guys were going around the country selling BBI and the Handshake,” she said.

The county chief further stated that the DP connected with the youth folk, whom she claims also hold the opinion that he played a huge role in Uhuru’s success in successive presidential elections.

“They also think he has played a very huge part in President Uhuru being in office for two terms,” she added.

Waiguru criticized influential leaders and businessmen, currently planning Uhuru’s succession matrix in the Mount Kenya region.

She claims that the leaders have been focusing on identifying a single leader from the region who will carry Mt Kenya votes to their preferred candidate between ODM leader Raila Odinga and DP Ruto.

Waiguru opines that locals in the region are no longer beholden to tribe. She states that the young generation have upset the businessmen’s arithmetic and by following leaders they believe in without the tribe factor coming to play.
