Barely a week after being seen with ODM leader Raila Odinga during his birthday celebration on Sunday, August 22, Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua insists that he will be on the ballot as a presidential candidate in the 2022 General Elections.

The governor, who had breakfast with Raila at his Karen residence in honour of his birthday, said the possibility of him working with Raila depends on which side of a political coalition he will be.

“What this country need is a good leader; I am still running for president. On working together, we have to figure out in what coalition does Raila fall and where do I fall because this county needs to have new leaders; fresh faces out there,” he said.

At the same time, Governor Mutua acknowledged the need to have a political partnership that two of him must bring on board experienced and younger politicians.

The motive of such coalitions, he insinuates, is to mould future leaders as the older generation head to retirement.

“We need to be cognizant of the fact that we need a combination of older citizens and leaders with younger vibrant leaders who will take us forward because the button has to be handed over,” he added.

At the same time, the Governor hinted at the possibility of joining a coalition in future so long as it is premised on the desire to bring change and development to the people of Kenya.

“If there is going to be a coalition, let it come at the end and let it seek to change Kenya especially in the provision of better living conditions of our people,” Mutua said.
