Over 2,591 people killed by road accidents since January
Road accidents have killed 2,591 people from January to Sept 25 this year. The death toll is a 16.8% rise from 2,219 who died at a similar period in 2018.
Over 13 other people not accounted for in the statistics have died since Sept 25, bringing the total number to more than 2,604. The most recent accident happened in Awasi, Kisumu County where 13 people died.
Pedestrians were most affected with 1005 deaths followed by passengers at 524. The toll for motorcyclists was 517 and 245 for drivers.
From the accidents, 4,825 people were seriously injured in the period which is an increase from 3,309 people in the same period last year.
The statistics were released by the National Transport and Safety Authority NTSA. NTSA had targeted to reduce the road accidents but fell short of the target by 28.8%.
