Lovejyot Singh survived an early morning scare to rack up double victory as the fifth round of the KCB Kenya National Autocross Championship culminated at the 4.7km Mombasa Cement racetrack in Vipingo, Kilifi County.

He won the 2WD Turbo Class in an “Attacker Buggy” and 4WD Turbo in his Impreza rally contraption but went on to describe the scary facet of his drive “a pleasant surprise”.

The Nairobi-based tarmac speedster ran a trouble-free practice loop in the early morning but broke the front left suspension in the first heat.

“I was contemplating retiring the Subaru after the first heat when my front left suspension packed up.

But touch wood, Kirit (Rajput) lent me his suspension and it’s because of him that I won the 4WD Turbo Class. I’m overly excited.

It’s really amazing, on the track we are rivals but off the track a big family.” Lovejyot narrated.

Defending Champion Sahib Omar also suffered his fair share of gremlins in 4WD Turbo Class to finish the race second. 

Sahib was left to rue what he termed “a bad day in the office.”

Homeboy Sohanneet Singh Puee completed the podium dash in third as KNRC Premier Class driver Eric Bengi took fourth place.

“We had a few issues. We also never did a pared lap for familiarisation.  So the car was heating up due to low altitude  then we noticed a leakage on the gearbox; we must have hit something, I believe. We also broke the radiator in practice.

The track was very slippery and quite deceiving.” Sahib said of his race woes as the dust settled on the coast round organized by Mombasa Motor Club (MMC).

Yuvraj Rajput driving a 500cc Magi-Bug won the Bambino Class beating rival Karanveer Singh Rooprai to second position.

Neel Gohil beat Brandon Nganga and lady driver Hanifa Yakub to second and third in 2WD Non Turbo Junior Class.

Hamza Anwar celebrated his first ever win on a 4WD machine in an ex-Peter Horsey Evolution.
