Former Nation Media Group editor Dan Otieno was killed in a grisly accident at Uthiru on Monday night.

Dagoretti sub-county police commander Francis Wahome said Otieno was hit by an unknown vehicle around 9pm as he was crossing the road.

However, the driver did not stop, leaving the lifeless body in the middle of the road.

Otieno, who was working for a Public Relations (PR) firm in Westlands had served first as a reporter at Nation before later being promoted as regional editor both in Kisumu and Nyeri.

Otieno died just few hours after another former Nation journalist Maurice Juma Kaluoch died of suspected Covid-19 complications in Homa Bay.

At the time of his death, Kaluoch was the director of communication in the  Homa Bay County

Dagoretti police boss yesterday said the vehicle did not stop but they had launched investigations to track down the driver and establish what actually happened.

A witness called the deceased’s brother and informed him of the accident.

“We were aware that one of our friends was travelling from Kisumu. We informed him and he stopped at Uthiru where he confirmed to us that he had actually died,” a relative told People Daily.

The body was taken to the City mortuary awaiting post-mortem.

“I mourn a great Journalist. During the time I was Chairman for LSK Kisumu Chapter and West Kenya Law Society respectively Daniel Otieno of Nation and Harold Ayodo of Standard used to religiously cover our events.

They were young reporters determined to make it in the field,”  said lawyer Aggrey Mwamu, a  former East Africa Law Society president.

Colleagues who had  worked with the Otieno described him as a diligent journalist and a great trainer.

“Dan was a fine gentleman with a taste for  the finer things in life.  He trained and mentored a number of top journalists that litter newsrooms across the country,” said Emeka-Mayaka Gekara, the People Daily political Editor who had worked with the two journalists.

“Kaluoch was  a veteran journalist, a jolly elder and opinion shaper in the spaces he operated. He was humble, respectful and generous,” said Gekara.

 Otieno becomes the eighth former and serving journalist to be killed in an accident in the last two years.

Late December 2018, a former Nation Media Group writer Casper Waithaka died in a road accident along Mombasa road.

At the time of his death, Waithaka was a communication officers at the East African Portland Cement.

Three weeks later, one of the Nations Information Technology (IT) staff, Winston Mogere, also died in a road accident.
