Ten highest paid English Premier League managers
Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is by far the biggest earner on the list but there are some surprising other inclusions. Here is a look at the wages of other top EPL earners, writes Webster Nyandika
1. Pep Guardiola (Man City) – Sh2.8b £20m
Guardiola reportedly takes home Sh 2.8 billion (£20million) yearly salary, which works out as approximately Sh 54 million (£385,000) per week.
Unlike many other top clubs with superstar players, the 49-year-old earns more than his best-paid squad members.
Belgian midfielder Kevin De Bruyne is said to be the club’s highest-paid player on Sh 49 million (£350,000 per week).
Close behind De Bruyne is Raheem Sterling, who reportedly collects Sh 42 million (£300,000), while fellow forward Sergio Aguero has a weekly wage of Sh 32.2 million (£230,000).
2. Jose Mourinho (Tottenham) – Sh2.1b
European football changed forever when Jose Mourinho arrived at Chelsea declaring himself “The Special One”.
Mourinho is on a lucrative Sh 2.1 billion (£15 million-a-year) contract at Tottenham, according to the Daily Mail.
However, his actual earnings, once endorsement deals, image rights and so forth are taken into account, are reported to amount to over Sh 2.8 billion (£20 million).
3. Jurgen Klopp (Liverpool) – Sh2.1b
Jurgen Klopp is known for his charismatic personality and his tactical nous has helped him enjoy success at Mainz, Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool.
The German manager has become an attractive partner for a variety of brands, who are keen to latch on to his infectious, smiling persona.
He is on a lucrative Sh 2.1 billion (£15 million-a-year) contract at Anfield.
4. Carlo Ancelotti (Everton) – Sh1.6b
Everton manager, Carlo Ancelotti, and a number of the first-team squad joined senior club officials in accepting wage deferrals during the coronavirus shutdown, three months ago.
However, he remains the fourth highest paid manager in the Premier League with an annual wage of Sh 1.6 billion (£11.5m).
5. Brendan Rodgers (Leicester) – Sh1.4b
Brendan Rodgers’ bumper new contract at the King Power stadium last year catapulted him up the list of the Prem’s highest paid managers as he currently earns Sh 1.4 billion (£10m).
6. Marcelo Biesla (Leeds)- Sh 1.1b
Marcelo Bielsa signed a new one-year contract with Leeds United, to take him into the top 10.
The 65-year-old was comfortably one of the highest paid head coaches in the Championship, if not the highest, and no other manager in the club’s history has earned so much. Currently he is on a wage of Sh 1.1 billion.(£8m).
7. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (Man United) -Sh 1 billion)
The former Manchester United striker currently earns Sh 1 billion (£7.5m) a year, which is roughly half of what his predecessor Jose Mourinho was earning at Old Trafford.
8. Ralph Hassenhuttl (Southampton) – Sh 840m
Southampton became the first EPLclub to announce they had reached a wage deferral agreement with their players following the coronavirus outbreak.
The players each gave up 10 per cent of their salaries for April, May and June to help protect the jobs of staff.
9. Frank Lampard (Chelsea) – Sh770m
Frank Lampard won three Premier League titles, four FA Cups, a Champions League and the Europa League during an illustrious playing career.
The former midfielder is reported to be earning Sh 770 million (£5.5) a year for his job as Chelsea boss.
10. Mikel Arteta (Arsenal) – Sh700m
Mikel Arteta’s professional career began at Barcelona and his journey took him to France, Scotland, back to Spain and finally to England, where he wound things down before moving into coaching.
He lined up for Paris Saint-Germain, Rangers, Real Sociedad, Everton and Arsenal, but despite maturing into one of the best midfielders in the Premier League, international honours eluded him.
A relatively understated character, Arteta quietly went about his business as a footballer before serving a coaching apprenticeship as Pep Guardiola’s assistant at Manchester City.
Arteta is understood to be earning Sh700 million (£5m) a year as Arsenal head coach, meaning he is set to pocket £20 million ($25m) over the course of the four-year deal, which runs until 2023.
