Mombasa County government has stopped the reopening of eateries and restaurants despite a directive issued by the National government for return to business on condition they comply with public health guidelines.

In a public notice targeting all eateries and restaurants, county Public Health chief officer Aisha Ali Abubakar cited the growing number of Covid-19 cases and deaths in Mombasa as the main reason for the decision.

“On April 27, 2020, the Ministry of Health issued guidelines and requirements to be complied with for the reopening of eateries and restaurants.

However, taking into consideration the worrying rise in Covid-19 cases and deaths within Mombasa, the County’s Emergency Response Committee on Covid-19 has resolved to temporarily halt the re-opening of these establishments,” the chief officer stated.

The county has continued to record new Covid-19 cases and deaths by the day. By yesterday, Mombasa’s Covid-19 cases stood at 252.

“The committee will closely monitor the developments on Covid-19 in the county and instruct on suitable dates for re-opening…” the memo read further.
