Host nation Kenya will be out to defend the overall title as seven countries battle it out at the third Eastern Africa Police Chiefs Cooperation Organisation (EAPCCO) Games.

The event was officially opened by Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i and his Sports counterpart Amina Mohamed at Kasarani Stadium yesterday.

In the first match played immediately after the opening ceremony, Kenya football team trounced Tanzania 2-0 with Peter Mwaura scoring a brace in addional time of the first and second halves.

Kenya played the second half with 10 men after first choice goalkeeper Chris Baraza was shown a straight red card for foul play late in the first half.

The hosts are out to retain the title won in Tanzania last year where they managed 68 medals (25 gold, 20 silver and 23 bronze). Once again, they will be up against Burundi, Rwanda, Sudan, South Sudan, Tanzania and first edition winners Uganda.

Matiang’i empasised the important of the games in fighting policing threats faced by the 14-member countries. He said the role of police in strengthening regional co-operation and integration in the fight against transnational and organised crime was crucial.

“The challenges we face as a region are the same. Therefore, there is no reason we should not work together. Sports is an avenue that brings officers together. I want to congratulate all the countries that sent representatives to the games,” said Matiang’i.

Amina reiterated the role of the police in supporting sports, especially in athletics.

“We are aware most of the athletes winning medals for Kenya are from the disciplined forces and Police to be specific. That does not go unnoticed,” she said.

Meanwhile, General Service Unit (GSU) have vowed to retain their volleyball title won from the previous two editions. Moses Epoloto’s side will be in action this afternoon against Tanzania.
