Kiharu students to continue paying Ksh1,000
Students in day secondary schools in Kiharu Murang’a will continue paying Ksh1,000 per term unlike their counterparts in other parts of the country who will be paying Sh6,000.
Under the Masomo Bora program initiated by the area MP Ndindi Nyoro, the National Government- Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) will cater for other balance and channel the funds directly to the school.
The move that is aimed at ensuring that none of the child in the area misses school due to financial constraints.
Speaking during the launch of the second phase of the program at Mugoiri Mixed Secondary School in Kahuro, Nyoro said despite the government paying part of the fee through the capitation, a majority of the parents are still not able to raise the remaining balance.
He said this has been making students drop out of school but lowering the fee will make it affordable to all. Some schools, he noted have already increased the fee to try bridge that financial gap now that there is no form one admission this year.
“Due to the harsh economic times, it’s becoming difficult for a majority of parents to raise the school fees and some opt to keep their children at home,” he said.
“Under this program, all students in day schools in this area will be paying a standard amount which I believe is affordable to all,” added Nyoro. The MP pointed out that the day schools, unlike in the past where they used to post poor academic results, their performance is going up now competing with the boarding secondary schools.
“We have day schools producing students with grades that qualify them to join the university and this is a good trend,” he remarked.
He noted that there has been massive enrollment in the day schools in the area with over 150,000 new applications made over one week.
“We have people from other areas sending their students here and the doors are open because our aim is to ensure every child has access to education,” remarked the MP.
