‘He must be denied the microphone by all means’ – Etale condemns MP Farah Maalim’s inflammatory speech at Ruto’s rally
Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party Director of Communications Philip Etale has condemned Dadaab Member of Parliament (MP) Farah Maalim over his recent inflammatory speech as President William Ruto’s rally in Turbo, Uasin Gishu county.
Taking to his official X account on Sunday, January 12, 2024, Etale called out the lawmaker, saying that he lacked moral compass to stand before the masses and address them.
Etale on Maalim’s words
Etale further stated that the words MP Maalim chose to use at the rally belong to the 20th Century, noting that it is a high time the lawmaker is denied the microphone during public events, by all means.
“Any sane person wouldn’t want to hang around people like Farah Maalim Mohammed. He is a man who lacks moral compass to stand before the masses and address them. The words he used in Turbo last week belong to the 20th century. He must be denied the microphone by all means,” Etale stated.

Maalim was on Friday, January 10, captured on video issuing controversial remarks in Turbo during President Ruto’s working tour of the North Rift.
The controversial lawmaker was accorded a chance to address the gathering in one of the head of state’s stopovers, to which he spoke unprintables while defending the president against his critics.
He declared that Ruto would not leave the presidency soon, as demanded by the naysayers of his administration, to whom he directed his abusive remarks, arguing that the head of state would win with a landslide as he guaranteed him of the North Eastern votes.
His inflammatory remarks irked Kenyans online with a majority criticising the lawmaker and calling for his resignation.
Wiper Democratic Movement Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka is among the leaders who criticised Maalim over his remarks.
It should be noted that the lawmaker was elected on a Wiper ticket.
Kalonzo criticised his remarks and termed his actions shameful.
He also noted that he will advise the Wiper legislator to resign from the party.
“I condemn Farah Maalim remarks in the strongest terms possible. Today’s outrageous utterances I will advise him to resign and not wait to be thrown out. His actions were shameful,” Kalonzo said.
Farah Maalim’s controversies
This is, however, not the first controversy the lawmaker is facing.
In July 2024, he was summoned by the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) after his controversial remarks on the anti-government protests.
NCIC said it was investigating the utterances of the Daadab MP made in the Somali language during the Gen Z demonstrations against the Finance Bill 2024.
The commission noted that Maalim’s remarks were likely to incite feelings of contempt, hatred, hostility, violence, or discrimination and affect harmonious coexistence between groups of different political affiliations in Kenya.
“Hon. Farah Maalim is required to appear before the Commission to assist with the aforementioned ongoing investigations. Failure to appear in person at the said place, date, and time, is an offense as provided under Section 63 (c) as read with Section 63 (e) of the NCI Act,” NCIC added.
This came after a video of Maalim emerged online where the Wiper MP claimed that the young people who took to the streets in the recent protests were from wealthy backgrounds and largely from one community.
Maalim openly said he would have wiped them out in their thousands if he was the Kenyan president.
