Kalonzo issues ultimatum on reconstitution of IEBC, threatens to lead nationwide demos
Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka has threatened to lead nationwide demonstrations against the Kenya Kwanza government if President William Ruto fails to reconstitute the Independence Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) panel by March 2025.
Speaking during a thanksgiving event for Wiper nominated MCA Catherine Kyee in Machakos County on Saturday, December 21, 2024, Kalonzo expressed displeasure with the government’s readiness to constitute the electoral body.
“You are either a compromised leader or someone who listens to the people.
“If the IEBC has not been reconstituted by March next year, I will lead Maandamano demonstrations against this disastrous KK regime. We will send Zakayo home,” the Wiper leader said.
He, at the same time, weighed in on Ruto’s recent cabinet reshuffle saying it was a well calculated plan to merge power and push personal interests and not tackle key national issues.
The Wiper leader additionally underscored that contrary to claims that the reshuffle was broad-based, the realignment was fixated on individual gains for politicians.
“It’s not broad-based, but bread-based, even blood-based, considering some children lost their lives during protests. This is like dancing on the blood of these children,” Kalonzo stated.
“President Ruto is leading a dysfunctional administration. Leaders who cannot be trusted have made pacts with him at the expense of ordinary citizens.”
Further, Kalonzo called out the Kenya Kwanza administration for failing to address the challenge of high taxation which he says has burdened Kenyans struggling to survive lean times.
“Gen Z cut down the tree on June 25, Zakayo came down, but taxes are still high. What they’re doing is patchwork governance,” he added.
