‘I am not interested in serving as Cabinet Secretary’ – Kimani Ichung’wah sets record straight on being fronted for Interior CS
Kikuyu Member of Parliament Kimani Ichung’wah has ruled out joining President William Ruto’s Cabinet in a bid to consolidate the Mt Kenya region.
Speaking to a local TV station on Wednesday night December 11, 2024, the Leader of the Majority explained that he was not interested in serving as a Cabinet Secretary.
The vocal lawmaker maintained that his job is well cut out for him as a member of parliament as well as the Leader of the Majority.
“I am not interested in serving as a CS. I have a well-cut-out job in serving as the MP for Kikuyu and I believe I would offer my energies better in the National Assembly as leader of the majority given the opportunity by my coalition, therefore you are not looking at a cabinet secretary here,” Ichung’wah told the local TV station.
Turn down Ruto’s offer
At the same time, Ichung’wah revealed that in 2022 President William Ruto approached him and asked him to pick any cabinet slot he wanted.
However, Ichung’wah disclosed that he turned down the offer and informed Ruto that he was only interested in advancing the government agenda by serving as the Leader of the Majority in the National Assembly.
“In 2022 President William Ruto asked me to tell him what cabinet position I wanted and I told him that I wanted to be the leader of the majority in the National Assembly,” Ichung’wah revealed.
His sentiments come after a section of Kenyans online questioned why Ruto had not appointed Interior Cabinet Secretary following the elevation of Abraham Kithure Kindiki to serve as Deputy President.
Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi is however serving as the Interior CS until Ruto makes a fresh appointment.
At the same time, Ichung’wah dismissed claims that the Mt Kenya region has shifted following the impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
This was after the local TV host asked if his appointment as substantive Interior CS would help Ruto’s administration regain the lost ground in the Mt Kenya region which voted for him overwhelmingly during the 2022 elections.
However, Ichung’wah insisted that the region is still intact despite Gachagua’s ouster.
On the recent meeting between President Ruto and his predecessor Uhuru Kenyatta at Gatundu, Ichung’wah insisted that it was a good political move aimed at uniting the country further.
