Opposition leader Martha Karua’s Narc Kenya party yesterday officially quit the Azimio la Umoja coalition to chart its own political future ahead of the 2027 general election.
Narc Kenya’s exit from Azimio, which was ratified by the party’s National Delegates Conference (NDC) at the Ufungamano House was the culmination of a fallout between Karua and opposition leader Raila Odinga following the latter’s dalliance with President William Ruto.
During the NDC, the party hierarchy also ushered in a new era that is aimed at reforming leadership and ensuring commitment to good governance, integrity in the management of public affairs, justice, equality and democracy anchored in the rule of law. Among other key reforms, the party ratified a two-term tenure for party leaders and officials who will be required to step down upon completing their terms.
Additionally, the party has decided to change its official colours from red and green to purple and white. Its slogan “One Kenya, One Nation, One People” remains the same.
“I want to thank the NDC for giving the leadership of Narc Kenya the mandate to rebrand the party in readiness for 2027,” Karua said while addressing the delegates.
Watchdog roles
Karua called for the resignation of President William Ruto and his administration, citing their failure to deliver its promises to Kenyans two years after assuming office.
“The newly introduced SHA/SHIF is not only enhanced taxation but an erosion of access to quality health even for those who are forced to enrol through hefty unsustainable deductions from payslips already burdened by unfair multiple taxes,” she said.
Furthermore, Karua emphasized, the education system is in shambles citing mismanagement of the CBC (Competent Based Curriculum) and the new university funding model, which have jeopardised the education of students from vulnerable families.
The 2022 Azimio running-mate accused Parliament of failing in their role as the public’s watchdog.
“Parliament at the national level, both the Senate and the National Assembly, have morphed largely from being a watchdog of the people to lapdogs of the Executive,” charged Karua, insisting that for order to be restored, Ruto must go.
