Second edition of the Busia Half Marathon is set to take place on December 15, 2024, promising a competitive showdown among top athletes from across the region.

With a lucrative prize pool, the 21km race is expected to attract renowned runners eyeing the top cash rewards.

Winners in both the men’s and women’s categories will take home Sh200,000 richer each, while runners-up will pocket Sh150,000.

Additionally, cash prizes will be awarded to the top 20 finishers, with the 20th-place athlete receiving Sh10,000.

The marathon, organised by the Western Development Initiative Association (WEDIA) in partnership with the County Government of Busia, Athletics Kenya’s Western Branch, and the National Police Service, aims to shine a spotlight on talent in the region while also raising awareness about cancer.

“This is our second edition, and we are committed to making it big as we set the stage for even bigger things in Busia County,” WEDIA chairman Joseph Barasa stated, calling on corporate sponsors to also support the initiative.

The event will feature additional races, including a 10km race, a fun run as well as a corporate run.
Registration fees are set at Sh1,500 for the half marathon, Sh500 for the 10km and fun run whereas for the corporate teams registration have been capped at Sh50,000.

What’s more, Barasa emphasised the importance of the marathon in uncovering local talent.
He shared, “Busia is home to many talented athletes, and this provides a great platform for them to showcase their skills.”

Preparations are already underway, with organisers working to ensure the event not only identifies future champions but also creates a lasting impact on health awareness in the community.
