MPs to collect views on proposed taxes

Members of parliament drawn from the departmental committee on Finance and National Planning will collect views from the members of the public on the proposed taxes today.

The exercise will kick off in Isiolo and Bungoma to gauge the public’s view on the state’s proposals to plug a Ksh346 billion deficit occasioned by the withdrawal of the Finance Bill 2024.

The bills to be considered during the public participation are the Tax Laws (Amendment) Bill 2024, the Tax Procedures (Amendment) Bill 2024, the Public Finance Management (Amendment) (No.3 ) Bill 2024, the Public Finance Management (Amendment) (No.4 ) Bill 2024 and the public procurement and disposal act amendment bill 2024.

Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has vowed to resist any attempts by the government to increase taxes, sentiments affirmed by the Minority party whip in the National Assembly, Robert Mbui.

MPs prepare to vet Ruto’s nominees

Members of parliament will be preparing to vet President William Ruto’s nominees for key positions in three Constitutional Commissions and two State Offices.

In a communication, Speaker of the National Assembly, Moses Wetang’ula informed lawmakers regarding five messages from H.E the President relating to the nomination of 21 persons for positions at the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), the Commission on Administrative Justice (CAJ), the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC), the National Gender and Equality Commission (NGEC), and the Central Bank of Kenya.

Ruto nominated Ahmed Issack Hassan as the Chairperson of the Board of the IPOA, Charles Orinda Dulo as Chairperson of the Commission on Administrative Justice, Sammy Chepkwony as Chairperson of the Salaries and Remuneration Commission and Gerald Nyaoma to be the Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Kenya.
