Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has accused the Members of Parliament, for betraying the country by voting for the Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s impeachment.

Speaking during Mashujaa Day celebrations in Mwingi, Kitui county on Sunday, Musyoka condemned the lawmakers for being “bought” and allowing President William Ruto’s administration to escape scrutiny.

Kalonzo expressed deep concern over the state of parliamentary independence, asserting that the body had been “kidnapped by the Executive.”

He went on to claim that the impeachment process had been compromised, with members of Parliament being financially manipulated through mechanisms like the “confidential vote” in the President’s office.

“The source of corruption in Kenya is the confidential vote in the Office of the President. Taxes collected from the people are used to buy members of Parliament like chickens in the market.

This is public money, not the President’s personal funds, being used to buy off those who are supposed to protect the honor of the country,” Kalonzo said in his address.

The motion to impeach Gachagua was tabled in both the National Assembly and Senate following weeks of mounting public pressure over allegations of corruption and abuse of office.

However, both houses voted overwhelmingly against the motion.

In the National Assembly, 282 out of 349 members supported the impeachment motion, signaling a strong loyalty to President Ruto’s government. The senate also upheld Gachagua’s impeachment with 45 MPs supporting his ouster.

Kalonzo accused Parliament of being complicit in shielding corrupt leaders, noting that the confidential vote, a fund shrouded in secrecy, was used to manipulate MPs into voting against the motion. He argued that this lack of accountability in handling public finances is one of the core reasons why corruption remains deeply entrenched in Kenyan governance.

In the same address, Kalonzo commended the youth, particularly Generation Z, for taking a stand against the government. He hailed them as the true heroes of Mashujaa Day, praising their ongoing protests and activism against the leadership of President Ruto. According to Kalonzo, it was the youth who saved the nation from bad leadership.
