Lawmakers will have a special sitting tomorrow to instal a new Deputy President once the Senate upholds the decision of the National Assembly to impeach the incumbent Rigathi Gachagua.

The move comes after the MPs approved a special motion to alter the calendar of the House to allow them to sit on Friday, which is not a normal sitting.

It is expected the Senate will uphold the decision of the National Assembly to send Gachagua packing therefore paving the way for the nomination of a new DP.

According to the Special Motion, the House resolves to commence the short recess on Tuesday, October 22, 2024 and hold sittings on Friday, October 18 commencing at 9.30 am for the morning sitting and 2.30 pm for the afternoon sitting, for purposes of considering priority business, including mediated bills.

Part of the motion approved by MPs reads that this has been called “pursuant to the provisions of Standing Orders 28(4) (Calendar of the House) and 30(3)(c) (Hours of Meeting)”.

While moving the motion, Majority Whip in the National Assembly Silvanus Osoro, told the lawmakers that the sitting is meant to consider priority business before the House. The South Mugirango legislator noted that there are several pending businesses before the House, which needed urgent attention of the members.

He further explained that the rationale for the House to alter its calendar arises from the fact that they need to recover the time they lost on Mazingira Day as well as time lost during the suspension of the sitting to allow for public participation in the impeachment of the Deputy President.

“It is due to urgency to conclude certain priority bills before the house before we proceed to recess like Sugar Bill, Water and Division of Revenue Bill, and then there is also need to provide for the house to consider any other business that may arise that may require expedited consideration,” he explained.

“We need to recover the time lost of the house including the Mazingira Day which was a public holiday last week and the suspension of the sitting to hold a public participation on Gachagua’s impeachment motion,” he said.

The decision of the House came on the day it emerged that already Ruto’s allies have prepared a de-gazettement of Gachagua that will be released with a gazette notice of the new Deputy President immediately Senate pronounces itself on the matter.

The decision by the lawmakers comes just hours after People Daily revealed the plans Ruto’s allies have put in place to install a new Deputy President.

The sources in the government and the National Assembly revealed in confidence a plan was afoot to convene a special sitting as early as Friday to consider Gachagua’s successor.

“As I told you, there is already a Gazette Notice revoking the name of Gachagua and another one appointing the new Deputy President. Wait until tomorrow (Thursday) at around 9 pm you will see what happens,” the source said.
