The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party has refuted claims that party leader Raila Odinga has convened a meeting with the party’s MPs over the proceedings of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s impeachment.
In a statement on Monday, October 7, 2024, ODM termed fake a digital card being circulated online, alleged to have originated from a local media house.
“There is no such meeting today. Good day,” ODM stated.
The media house has also flagged the digital card as fake, clarifying that it did not originate from them.
“Beware of fake news! If it’s not on our official social media pages, it’s fake,” the publication stated.
Gachagua impeachment hearing
Gachagua is set to appear before the National Assembly on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, to defend himself against 11 grounds of impeachment presented against him.
The second in command will appear before the August House at 5 pm and defend himself for two hours before the MPs decide on his proposed impeachment.
The motion to impeach Gachagua was presented in Parliament by Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse, who accuses him of violating several laws.
Among the accusations Gachagua is facing include promoting ethnic discrimination and undermining national unity through divisive public statements, contradicting government policies and failing to uphold his duties as the deputy president, undermining devolution and threatening the judiciary.
Other accusations include failing to respect and defend the Constitution, engaging in corruption, money laundering, and abuse of office, violating anti-corruption laws.
