Business, transport shut across Nyanza in anti-government in protests
Businesses and transport systems in Nyanza region continued to bear the brunt of the wave of anti-government protests that resumed across the country.
In Kisumu, normal business activities were largely disrupted by the demonstrations that resulted in slowed operations in market places and urban centres.
Transport along major roads in the area were highly paralysed, with most PSV vehicles forced to pull off from the roads amid fears of destruction during the Gen Z protests.
For the better part of the day the roads remained free off traffic flow, with minimal moments witnessed.
Some business owners that opened normally in the wake of the planned protests were forced to hurriedly close down over fears of their premises being looted.
Earlier in the day, several businesses had opened as usual, as there were indications that organizers of the demonstrations in the county were divided whether they could hold the processions or not.
Some supermarkets in the Central Business District (CBD) that had opened their doors for their customers hurriedly closed and released their staff. By close to midday, a group of youths singing patriotic songs walked from the bus terminus into the CBD.
Many were looking out for protesters to begin their procession from Kondele area, but, that did not happen this time round as the demos originated from the bus terminus.
Police officers watched from a distance as the youths walked into the streets, joined by motorcycle riders.
Learning was similarly not spared either as most schools, especially in the town centres kept their students at home.
In Homa Bay county, parallel groups of youth clashed over the protests that were planned on Tuesday.
The groups, one pro the protests and another opposed to it, confronted each other after disagreements ensued between them. The fracas broke out in Homa Bay town when the group that opposed the demonstrations attempted to restrain the other group from proceeding with the processions.
The dissenting opinions led to violence in which the two groups went physical against each other. In the ensuing fighting, the pro-demonstration group overpowered their rival group that retreated.
In the process some youths were injured while a saloon car was destroyed. A saloon car that was used by the protestors was pelted with stones, before it was dumped on the ditch. The car window panes were also smashed by the protestors.
