Cabinet Secretary for Public Service, Performance, and Delivery Management Moses Kuria has expressed his concerns over the country’s financial situation, highlighting that Ksh1 trillion is spent on paying debts and another Ksh1 trillion goes to salaries.

Kuria insists on the need for government reforms, especially those advocated by the youth, during an interview on a local TV station.

He noted that the youth’s push for addressing the huge expenditure issue aligns with his earlier statements.

“They have done my job. I was the lone voice out there. On April 15, during the Wage Bill conference, I said exactly what I am saying now. They have brought to the surface issues that are welcome. It is time we look into our huge expenditure,” Kuria remarked.

He further elaborated on the dire financial situation, describing how the country spends trillions on debts and salaries, leaving little room for other critical expenditures.

Kuria likened the current state of the country to a communist regime, referencing subsidized fertilizer and health.

“What makes me sometimes feel sad about this country is that Ksh1 trillion goes to debt, and another trillion goes to paying salaries. And I think Mao Zedong (Chinese politician, Marxist theorist, military strategist) must be inspired in his grave looking at this communist country called Kenya. We have free primary and secondary education, subsidized fertilizer, and now health. Free, free, free,” he lamented.

Moses Kuria on reflection

Kuria urged for a reflective approach, stating that emotions should be set aside to address these financial challenges effectively.

“If I don’t tax, how do I pay all these entitlements? Education alone costs Ksh650 billion, and it is not something we initiated in this government. That is why we need to have an honest conversation. We need to put a mirror in front of us, and if the mirror tells you that you have a pimple, don’t break the mirror; ask yourself why you have a pimple.
