UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has announced a fresh round of funding to Kenya worth Ksh82 million.

In a statement on Friday, June 14, 2024, the UK government noted that Sunak had vowed to bankroll Kenya’s infrastructure sector.

While making public the new funding package, the United Kingdom noted that it will aid the country in advancing the selected Green Industrialisation Initiative (AGII) focusing on the transport sector.

“The funding also includes Ksh82 million (£500,000) for an initiative to support planning, prioritisation and implementation of green infrastructure initiatives between the UK, the Government of Kenya and the wider G7,” the statement read in part.

” Focusing on transport projects selected from the Africa Green Industrialisation Initiative (AGII), this innovative partnership will lead to closer cooperation with the Kenyan Government on strategic infrastructure and investment and is the first partnership between the G7’s Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment and AGII,” it added.

Defending the fund, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak insisted that the UK wants to be at the forefront of pushing for better lives and supporting other countries.

“The UK is committed to driving a more effective international system that improves lives for people across the globe and at home.

“The green transition and the development of AI are key components of this, and the funding announced today will help ensure that these seismic changes happen in a way that works for all,” Sunak said.

The UK government added that Rishi Sunak is set to argue on reforming the international financial system to unlock the finance for the acceleration of progress against the sustainable development goals, strengthening the voices of the most vulnerable at the top table of international politics.

This is in line with President William Ruto’s continued push for the restructuring of global financing architecture.

Railway city project

This latest round of funding shows the UK’s commitment to strengthening ties with Kenya. The European country is already undertaking an ambitious Railway city project in Nairobi.

The Nairobi Railway City is an iconic multi-modal urban development situated within 425 acres between Haile Sellasie Avenue, Uhuru Highway, Landhies Road and Bunyala Road.

It is touted to regenerate the area around Nairobi Central Railway Station into a modern Railway City by providing a sustainable urban space, creating a Transit Oriented Development (ToD).

With the multimodal transport facility expected to follow, through UK input, the areas around the project are also expected to get a facelift.
