Kenya 7s legend Kayange heaps praise on stalwart
Former Kenya 7s skipper Humphrey Kayange has praised an exceptional performance by Kevin Wekesa following Shujaa’s triumph in Madrid.
Kayange, who also heads the sevens program, spoke highly of the Kabras prospect, noting his impressive contributions to the team despite still being in his formative years.
Kayange on Wekesa
Speaking upon returning to Kenya from Spain, Kayange humorously attributed Wekesa’s outstanding performance to the number six jersey, which he wore during his playing days for Shujaa.
“I think Wekesa has been unbelievable in terms of what he brings to the team, especially alongside captain Vincent Onyala, and how he has been able to rally the team,” Kayange remarked.
Kayange, who was part of Kenya’s squad that won their first World Series title in Singapore, could not contain his excitement about the future prospects of Kenya 7s.
“It’s so thrilling to see them achieve such wins and gains at the start of their sporting careers. I am looking forward to them experiencing the best of their abilities and achieving even more than what we have seen so far,” he added.
According to Kayange, the team is poised to surpass past generations if their current qualification journey is any indication. The former Shujaa skipper noted that most of the players, who were making their maiden appearances on the global stage, handled the pressure exceptionally well.
He attributed the young squad’s success to the immense talent within the ranks and acknowledged the development work that has helped nurture these young talents.
Shujaa will feature in the World Series 2025 season, marking a comeback after being sidelined for a season due to relegation.
