One member of the County Assembly of Murang’a will be facing assault charges for allegedly attacking a female police officer during a scuffle that ensued on Tuesday afternoon.

Murang’a County police boss David Kainga said investigations into the matter have been launched and those involved in the destruction of property will also face the law.

Addressing the media at his office, Kainga said the assaulted police officer had recorded her statement which will be used to issue a warrant of arrest for the said MCA.

“On Tuesday, chaos erupted in the assembly with the members protesting delayed payment and salaries and one of our police officers was assaulted and we are not taking it lightly,” said Kainga.

“The officers were there to maintain order and ensure there would be no destruction of property and attacking any of them was uncalled for,” he remarked.

Additionally, Kainga emphasized that further arrests will be carried out for individuals implicated in the destruction of property, as such actions are deemed unlawful.

“The investigating officers have already processed the scene and those who were within the assembly when the incident happened have some of their statements which will help us in piecing the information to help us nab the culprits,” he added.

He noted that the MCAs should seek alternative avenues to address their grievances instead of resorting to violence and property damage.

The MCAs engaged in a protest due to delayed payment of their salaries and allowances. Additionally, they sought to pass a motion to remove two colleagues from the county assembly service board.

Regarding an incident in Kigumo on Monday, where chaos erupted during a public gathering due to clashes between two political factions, Kainga urged leaders to take responsibility in controlling their supporters.

“Political leaders should stick to their lane and avoid incidences that are likely to stir violence,” remarked Kainga.

He said political violence will not be tolerated in this area and those who will be found culpable of incitement will face the law.

“Though there were no casualties reported in this incident, it was an ugly one and does not set good precedence” he added.
