As anticipation builds for this year’s WRC Safari Rally, Traffic Commandant Mary Omari (AIG) says the event is set to be a global masterpiece, with a meticulous focus on integrated traffic management and comprehensive safety measures.

The rally, covering a total distance of 1200km across Nairobi and Nakuru counties, promises a thrilling experience for both spectators and participants.

Addressing journalists in Nairobi, AIG Mary Omari shared insights into the initial preparations, emphasizing the adoption of an integrated traffic management plan. She highlighted key aspects, including the identification and marking of high-risk areas along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway.

Omari stated: “Strategies are in place to deploy ample personnel to address any issues that may arise, emphasizing swift response to accidents.”

As part of the proactive measures, the team will have breakdown vehicles ready to tow any cars involved in an accident to avoid obstruction on the entire stretch. Additionally, the hospitals along the route are well-equipped, with ambulances and breakdown vehicles strategically positioned for swift emergency response along the rally routes. These plans will help to minimize response times and maximize the efficiency of medical and emergency services.

Collaboration takes center stage in the safety plan, with Omari stressing the involvement of various stakeholders. This includes coordination with agencies from Nakuru, Uasin Gishu, and Nyandarua Counties, along with the National Youth Service, Kenya Forest Service, Kenya Wildlife Service, and the General Service Unit.

The synergy among these agencies aims to ensure smooth traffic operations for spectators and create a secure environment within the rally. On the same note, Omari expressed confidence in the team’s ability to handle the expected increase in spectators, particularly with the rally scheduled for the Easter weekend.
Reflecting on past experiences, she acknowledged lessons learned from slight traffic mishaps in 2022 and went on to highlight improvements in the 2023 edition.

Further, she assured the public that preparations for the 2024 rally are well underway, with early planning, increased officer deployment, route mapping and crucial agencies identified.

Throughout the rally, media alerts will keep attendees informed about road conditions, emphasizing transparency and effective communication in managing the event.

Omari added: “We have planned early enough. We are deploying more officers, have mapped the routes, and put the crucial agencies we might need in place.”
