Shinyalu MP Fred Ikana has embarked on an elaborate plan to rescue a number of schools in his constituency that were facing imminent collapse due to dwindling student population.

Ikana said yesterday that they would pay 60 per cent of the total fees of all Form Four candidates attending day schools in the constituency through education bursaries this year.

He said they will also create a classroom of 50 students per each of the secondary schools per year whose fees would be fully paid by the area NG-CDF.

He said the exercise had commenced at St. Philip’s Mukomari Girls High School where 50 students have been admitted under the programme.

The school has been grappling with a dwindling number of student enrolment raising concerns that it could collapse.

“We have initiated 50 students into form one at St. Philip’s Mukomari whose school fees will be fully paid for by the NG-CDF. We shall walk with the girls in their four-year journey,” he added.

The MP said he wanted to make schools in his Constituency as attractive as possible.

“People only focus on mainly Mukumu Boys, Mukumu Girls, Shibuye Girls, Shanderema, etc. but we have many other little-known institutions that are doing well in academics and out-of-class activities but are less attractive out there. Our objective is to support them,” he added.

Ikana urged members of communities around schools in the Constituency to support their administrations so as to foster academic performance.

“We want to be an academic hub in Kakamega and entire Western region and the only way is to support our schools perform well,” he added.

He said plans to put up a technical training institute in Isukha East Ward were on course.
