Home golfer Mutahi leads by single shot heading into penultimate round of Safari Tour at Muthaiga
Home player Kibugu Mutahi carded in a score of -4 (67) to shoot to first place on the leaderboard after a tough third round of the ongoing Safari Tour Golf series currently going on at the par 71 Muthaiga Golf Club.
Kibugu’s cautious play in the front nine allowed him to earn eight pars to close at 35, as he hit four birdies but got a setback by dropping two bogies on holes 10 and 12.
Speaking to People Sports after his round, Kibugu attributed his day’s success to understanding the course better and managing the conditions.
“ I would not say it was as easy out there but I had to dig in.The front nine was tricky for most of us so it was all about patience with my shot execution. However the recovery was great in the back nine and especially the last two holes where I hit three birdies to leverage my score. I feel relaxed going into the last day because I have been in this position before with a one shot lead. Now it’s about getting my game right and finishing on a high in familiar territory. Hitting that fairway will be a plus and of course limiting errors,” said Mutahi.
Meanwhile, the trio of Paulino Kasoma, Jastas Madoya and Eric Ooko ended their third round with a -3 (68) tie at the second place on the leaderboard.
Namibian player Paulino Kasoma teed off on a bad footing hitting a bogie in the first hole but recovered brilliantly with back to back birdies in holes 3 and 4. Kasoma came alive in the back nine play with a birdie and eagle shot in holes 15 &18.
Ooko on his part, had birdies in holes 9,10 and 17 with otherwise cautious play overall in the rest of 15 holes.
Another group consisting of veteran player Dismas Indiza of Mumias Golf Club, Samuel Njoroge of Railways Golf Club and Greg Snow of Muthaiga Golf Club all tied at -2 (69) score. This was a marked improvement from Day 2 where both had moments to forget on the course especially with their putting.
Indiza had four birdies at holes 4,9,10&11 and an eagle shot at the last hole to get onto the last day with a shot under giving him a chance to get a second consecutive and overall third title after Limuru Country Club’s leg held last week.
Mike Kisia of Vetlab improved vastly by four shots after finishing on -1(67).His putter seemed to be more in effect, his swing and execution also came to the party to earn birdies in holes 3,4,15&17 whilst hitting an eagle in hole number 7.
Frank Matilo dropped three shots to relinquish his lead after he carded in a score of +2 in the third and his game is now level. He attacked the pin at number 18 having lost his ball in the thicket and as a result he closed his round with a double bogey at the 18th.
Rounding off the Top 10 placement was Frank Matilo who closed the day at Par (74) with Nelson Mudanyi on +1(72).
Action closes today with a prize offering of Shs 150,000 for the title winner.
