McKinstry claims Tusker are not Gor Mahia’s FKF PL title rivals
Gor Mahia head coach Johnathan McKinstry is convinced that Tusker will not win the 2023/24 Football Kenya Federation Premier League title.
Gor Mahia managed a 1-0 win over the Brewers on Saturday and consequently opened a 12-point gap over the Ruaraka club.
McKinstry, whose side is unbeaten and is enjoying a superb season so far, explained why Tusker are not Gor Mahia’s title rivals this season.
“That was Tusker’s sixth defeat of the season; no team has ever lost more than six and won the league in the last 20 years.
“It just extends our position at the top, and we have two weeks now until we play Police, and it will be really another tough game, but the guys are in great form, and we don’t want to slip up,” McKinstry told the media.
Before the game, McKinstry said they undertook an extensive analysis of Tusker and knew what to expect in the game that was held at Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos.
“Coming into the game, our analysis told us that even if Tusker won 5-0 against KCB.
“KCB had around seven chances in that game, so we knew Tusker would probably give up seven or 10 chances in the game and that we would have our opportunities to score,” the former Rwanda and Uganda national team coach added.
Frustrated McKinstry
The Northern Irish tactician was convinced that they would have registered a win with a bigger win had they utilised chances against the former champions.
“The thing I am a little frustrated about is that it was only 1-0 because I think if we had won by two or three goals, then I think it would have been a fair reflection on the dominance we had and the chances we created.
“If you look at the chances Tusker created, [goalkeeper] Kevin Omondi made a good save in the first half, but other than that, he has not really made a save. There were a few blocks and crosses collected, but I think the guys had done really well,” he concluded.
Gor Mahia are at the top, enjoying a ten-point gap over Nairobi City Stars, who are in action against AFC Leopards on Sunday.
