Ruto challenges NYS to complete stalled community projects
The National Youth Service (NYS) has been directed to complete the stalled six community projects whose value is estimated at Sh650 million in a period of 90 days in Marakwet West constituency in Elgeyo Marakwet county.
President William Ruto issued the directive on the matter when he attended an inter-denominational prayer service at Iten playground that was graced by Kenya Kwanza leaders among them Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
The stalled projects include Chebara Boys High School, Chebara Girls High school, Kaptomut primary school, AIC Chebara, Chebara Youth Polytechnic and cattle dip.
Area MP Timothy Kipchumba has been tasked with overseeing the handing over of the multi-million shillings stalled projects at the site.
Heavy machinery and personnel deployed from the NYS headquarters in Nairobi were on the ground on Monday ready to undertake the completion of the stalled projects to the ululation of the local community.
The Head of State’s intervention follows a petition by the local residents through their MP to ensure completion of the mega projects which were demolished to pave way for construction of Sh1.5 billion Chebara water dam over 30 years ago.
The dam project was put up through a loan from the Germany government to supply the water to Eldoret town. Kipchumba has blamed massive corruption on the project management committee that was tasked with the implementation of the community projects and called for legal action against the culprits to recover lost money running into millions of shillings.
“It is unfortunate to note that a lot of money earmarked for the construction of the projects has gone down the drain and the school buildings are unsafe for the learners, as I speak now,” said Kipchumba. Ruto expressed hope the NYS will complete the projects as scheduled.
