After months of waiting for a way forward, the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) elections will be held late this year, as per the latest update.

This has been revealed after a meeting by the FKF National Executive Committee (NEC) held on Saturday, January 6, 2024.

“The NEC kick-started the process of the FKF elections 2024, scheduled to be held later in the year, by resolving that the said elections will be conducted using the FKF Electoral Code (2020), which was used in the last FKF elections.

“The federation is committed to prudent governance and the growth of football in Kenya. These resolutions will enable a more productive 2024 for all stakeholders. This provides consistency and transparency in the electoral process,” a statement signed by FKF Chief Executive Officer Barry Otieno revealed.

The next poll will be conducted using the code established before the last election, which was done in 2020.

“The NEC also resolved that the Annual General Meeting, which will ratify the FKF Electoral Board and Electoral Code (2020), be held on March 16, 2024, in Nairobi,” the statement continued to say.

With the first step towards the next election already revealed, attention will now shift to the presidential race, in which the incumbent, Nick Mwendwa, is expected to defend his seat.

Although Mwendwa has not expressly revealed his next plan, odds are that he is set to run and, in that case, will face competition from those who have already declared an interest.

Extreme Sports CEO Hussein Mohammed and Sammy ‘Kempes’ Owino, a former Gor Mahia player, have declared interest in the FKF top seat.

FKF calendar year

Meanwhile, the Saturday meeting also dealt with a number of issues apart from the election matter.

“Key among the resolutions was the approval of the calendar for all national teams, spanning the senior Harambee Stars, junior sides, and women’s teams. This comprehensive calendar will allow for better planning and preparation for key competitions,” the statement added.

Matters surrounding the competitions that fall under the FA’s umbrella were also discussed.

“The NEC also approved FKF’s competition calendar for 2024, covering all of the federation’s leagues and competitions, which will provide clarity for clubs and allow them to plan their seasons effectively.

“Members also discussed and adopted the FKF’s budget for 2024. The budget will allocate resources towards fulfilling FKF’s core objectives of developing football infrastructure, grassroots programs, elite player development, refereeing, and competitions,” the statement concluded.
