Registrar Anne Nderitu rubbishes proposal to scrap Political Parties Fund
Registrar of Political Parties Anne Nderitu has proposed an increase in funding of political parties to enhance democracy.
This comes amid calls from a section of Kenyans seeking the scrapping of the fund from the national budget to reduce expenditure.
Speaking on Saturday, September 30, 2023, Nderitu explained that scrapping off the budget is a violation of the Constitution and that it also undermines the operations of political parties.
“Hiyo mjadala ya kusema pesa za vyama itolewe kwa bajeti ama ipunguzwe sisi hatukubaliani nayo. Tunataka pesa hizo ziongezwe ili kupatie vyama nguvu zaidi…uchumi ni mbaya lakini pesa pia tunasema itaongezwa polepole hadi ifike 0.3 percent,” she stated.
2023/2024 funds
A gazette notice shared by Nderitu reveals that 48 political parties are eligible to receive funds from the Political Parties Fund (PPF) this year. The funds amounting to a total of Ksh1.48 billion will be distributed on a quarterly basis.
“The Registrar of Political Parties gives notice that the following forty-eight (48) political parties are eligible to receive funds from the Political Parties Fund (PPF) during the Financial Year 2023/2024,” the notice reads in parts.
According to the notice, the party that will receive the highest amount is the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) which will receive Ksh576.9 million, Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) comes second receiving Ksh308.2 million while Jubilee will receive Ksh135.2 million.
