KPA dominates Kenya Basketball League opener with commanding wins
Defending Kenya Basketball Federation-National League dual Champions KPA Men and Women teams have started the new season with greatness following important victories on the road.
In the lone Women League match played at Nyayo Stadium Gymnasium, Kenya Ports Authority outshone Africa Nazarene Panthers 69-29. Vilma Owino had a game-high 16 points assisted closely by Selina Okumu with 10 points. Linda Alando for KPA also weighed in with eight points and two rebounds for the Dockers.
The away team managed the game well with composure especially when they were in possession. Panthers’ lead scorers in the match were Nicole Otieno on 12 points while Desire Arsene weighed in with eight points in what was a disappointing outing for the University side.KPA led in all four quarters (06-17/07-21/10-20/05-11).
In the men’s top Division, KPA saw off Africa Nazarene University WolfPacks 64-47 in a game played at the University Grounds. The winning side had Job Byron on 20 points leading the charge in a remarkable display running the court.KPA also had Benjamin Muga weighing in with 14 points off the bench and Lennox Wanje on 10 points. The big players dominated on the surface and in the air during tussles and WolfPacks did not have the right responses.
However, the home team buoyed by their own supporters mounted a resilient fight-back albeit in short supply. Yien Matai was their leading scorer on the board with 12 points and also helped crucially in defensive duties as well. The other notable scores for ANU were the pair of Kurjill Bovia and Hawie Audi who combined for 16 points. In this match, KPA led in all quarters but were just lucky in the 2nd and 3rd quarters where they had no more than a two-point lead.
In another interesting top-division Men’s clash, Nairobi City Thunder inflicted more pain and damage over the WolfPacks with an incredible 98-55 win. Griffin Ligare, Ken Wachira and Faheem Juma had a busy afternoon as they combined for 40 points for KPA. Hawie Audi on his part had 20 points in the bag.
