Kitengela: Uncollected IDs destroyed as protesters set fire to Asst. County Commissioner’s office
An assistant county commissioner’s office in Kitengela, Kajiado county was on Wednesday, July 12, 2023, torched by demonstrators during the anti-government protests.
Among the valuables that were lost in the incident include uncollected Identity cards (IDs) and documents stored in the office.
A video seen by People Daily Digital shows the office in a messy state with some of the ID cards burnt partly while others fully. Some documents had been left scattered on the ground and the windows vandalised.
Police are yet to commence investigations and give progress on the matter.
This comes amidst cases of vandalism reported across the country due to the anti-government protests.
In one instance, protesters in Emali set a police van on fire and destroyed other properties such as a personal car.
Protesters within Machakos county also vandalised three toll stations; Mlolongo, Syokimau and the SGR toll stations.
Multiple reports stated that a section of demonstrators were left wounded after running battles with anti-riot officers. Nine people have also been left dead.
A section of leaders such as former Makueni governor Kivutha Kibwana have condemned the brutal killing of demonstrators by police and called on relevant authorities to intervene.
“It is wrong for the police to shoot and kill people like they have done in Emali town instead of ensuring demonstrators maintain peace during the demonstrations,” Kivutha said.
“The constitution gives people rights to demonstrate but peacefully, however, if police start disrupting peaceful demonstrators it leads to riots, loss of lives and property,” he added.
