County, national governments spend Sh4.1tr
The total budget for both the 47 County Governments and the National government for the first nine months of the financial year 2022/23 hit Sh4.18 trillion.
According to the latest data from the Controller of Budget (CoB), both levels of government surpassed the Sh4 trillion mark after Supplementary I budget revisions spiked it.
Breaking down the approved gross budget, it is reported that the National Government’s allocation accounted for the majority, reaching Sh3.67 trillion, while the 47 County Governments were allocated Sh512.92 billion.
“This reporting period is defined by a transition in government and recovery from the adverse effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Upon taking office, the new administration instituted measures to rationalise expenditure on non-core activities, reduce deficit financing, and enhance development activity financing,” said COB in the latest Budget Implementation Review.
Recurrent expenditure
Ministerial development expenditure received an allocation of Sh618.16 billion, while recurrent expenditure of the National Government’s budget hit Sh3.05 trillion.
Out of this, Sh1.5 trillion was allocated for recurrent ministerial expenditure, emphasizing the importance of sustaining the day-to-day operations of government ministries.
The remaining Sh1.55 trillion was dedicated to Consolidated Fund Services (CFS). Counties spent a total allocation of Sh512.9 billion which includes own source revenue and national government share.
The Consolidated Fund got Sh2.12 trillion, representing 56.8 per cent of the revised net estimates of Sh3.61 trillion.
