Senators seek stiff penalties for road users
Senators want strict penalties to be imposed on reckless drivers who cause accidents on the roads.
Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale disclosed that he is in the process of drafting a comprehensive set of traffic laws that will not only bring sanity to Kenyan roads but also streamline the ‘Boda Boda’ sector.
Yesterday, while supporting a petition by a concerned Kenyan to construct a foot bridge along Chiromo road to enable students access the Chiromo campus without being knocked on the road.
Senators Aaron Cheruiyot (Kericho), Hillary Sigei (Bomet), Veronica Maina (nominated) and Mariam Sheikh Omar (nominated) charged that Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen must now tame rogue drivers to save lives on the roads.
According to Cheruiyot, accidents occur because of reckless driving most of the times, adding that use of technology which is available in the country, rogue and reckless drivers can be tamed.
“When Murkomen was being vetted, he gave us an assurance that within a few days in office, he will put measures to deter bad habits. More than 90 per cent of the road accidents are caused by drivers who do not want to adhere to traffic laws,” said Cheruiyot.
Cheruiyot who is also the Senate Majority leader said that drivers need to be fined or lose their licenses whenever they are found guilty of traffic offenses.
