Mukumu students admitted in hospital over diarrhoea
At least 124 students from Mukumu Girls High School in Kakamega county were yesterday admitted at the Kakamega General Hospital suffering from suspected diarrhoea.
The students reportedly started complaining of stomachache and diarrhoea on Monday night.
The situation degenerated yesterday morning, forcing the school administration to rush the affected students to the hospital.
The first batch of students, numbering about fifty, were rushed to the adjacent St Elizabeth Mission hospital, Mukumu and admitted.
As the situation worsened, the school was forced to rush the other students to the Sheywe community hospital and Kakamega county general hospital where they were admitted.
People Daily could not reach the school’s principal, Fridah Amwayi for comment on the matter but the
Kakamega county chief officer for health services Dr David Alila confirmed that seventy-two students had so far been admitted at the county general hospital with similar symptoms.
“Yes, the students are still checking in now. So far we have tested 72 and the results are negative for cholera. We shall give a comprehensive report after exhaustive tests are completed,” Dr Alila said on phone.
The Kakamega County Director of Communications Sumba Juma separately confirmed that 72 students had been admitted at the county referral hospital suffering from Diarrhoea.
“After tests by Public Health Officers and medics, Cholera has been ruled out with food poisoning being the likely cause,” he added.
