At least 10 girls have been defiled across the country in the past week, according to police reports.

Two of the victims were defiled by their fathers, while one of them by a grandfather, raising fears that defilement in the family was drastically rising.

In one of the cases in Kyuso, Kitui county, a minor was defiled by her father at their home on Friday.

The girl’s teacher noticed that she was walking with difficulty and asked what had happened. “On enquiring what happened she informed  me that on Thursday March 9 she was defiled by her father namely Mr O.M.M aged 43 years while at their home,” a police report read.

Officers visited the scene and the victim was taken to Kyuso Sub-County Hospital for check up where doctors confirmed she had actually been defiled.

Police reports also indicate a seven-year-old girl was defiled by her grandfather, 60, in Ng’onyi, Meru county, on Thursday evening.

The victim’s mother (name withheld) said they found her father-in-law holding her child inside the family kitchen while half-naked. She raised an alarm and the suspect threatened to kill her before he escaped.

Third time

The child later revealed it was the third time the grandfather had defiled her. She was taken to Nairobi Women’s Hospital, Meru branch, for treatment.

The suspect is yet to be arrested.

In another case in Ivonda village, Kakamega on Thursday evening, a 16-year-old was defiled by two men who waylaid her while on a boda boda.

The rider said they were confronted by two male adults armed with pangas and who ordered them to stop but he was reluctant, prompting the suspects to attack them.

“They were confronted by two male adults armed with pangas who ordered the rider to stop. They blocked him and cut him on the neck, inflicting deep cuts,” police said.

They then defiled the girl before vanishing. The two victims were later rescued and taken to Iguhu Sub-County Hospital for treatment.

Police in Muruai, Nyandarua North, are also looking for a man who defiled a 17-year-old girl.

The victim’s father reported they noticed that their daughter was missing from home and mobilised neighbours to search for her. When she was later found, she narrated her ordeal.

Other defilement cases were reported in Nairobi, Kiambu and Nakuru counties where police are investigating incidents.

Police, however, say most cases go unreported, making it difficult to get the actual figures.

The situation is further exacerbated by the naivety of children that make them most vulnerable to perpetrators.

Under the Sexual Offences Act, a person who commits an offence of defilement with a child aged 11 years or less shall upon conviction be sentenced to imprisonment for life.

However, if the victim is aged between 12 and 15 the accused is liable to imprisonment for a term not less than 20 years.
