Raila cancels Kisii rally after Ongwae protests
Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition leader Raila Odinga has canceled his planned political rally in Kisii County that was scheduled for today, Monday, February 13.
Kisii County Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Chairman Kerosi Ondieki said the rally has been postponed to Friday, February 17.
“We have held consultations, and we want to give everyone a chance to attend the meeting. Kisii is home to the ODM party, and we would want to listen to every opinion,” Ondieki said.
The postponement came a day after former Kisii Governor James Ongwae warned the Azimio leadership of undermining President William Ruto’s impending visit to the region later this month.
“In the same spirit, we welcome the president to our Gusii region and condemn any attempt to cause uneasiness and whipping emotions of our people with the aim of imagining that they can derail the visit.
“Omogusii is ready and fully warmed for H.E William Samoei Ruto and no doubt any contrary attempt will not be tolerated.
“Sadly, the people spearheading the generation of tension and chaos have in the past organized and encouraged their troops and people to receive the president in their region in a very organized manner,” Ongwae said.
He further said President Ruto launched development projects in Nyanza and Azimio has not organised any protest political rallies in the region.
“Actually, the president left a lot of goodies in their region not to mention the many projects he initiated.
“I, therefore, Urge and plead with our leaders/people not to accept any shenanigans that are meant to paint our community as rebellious and to disadvantage our Gusii region from receiving the much-planned developmental projects by President Ruto,” he stated.
Ongwae on Gusii leadership
At the same time, the former governor said the new Gusii region leader is Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ezekiel Machogu.
“I know this is the best time for us Omogusii and under the stewardship of CS Machogu we are destined for higher grounds.
“Finally, for those planning orchestrated rallies across the country and want to do the same in Kisii, I urge you to reconsider your moves; accept that time for politicking is over; accept the presidency of H.E William Samoei Ruto and give him an opportunity to fulfill his contract with Kenyans,” Ongwae added.
