The 22-year-old woman who drowned in a dam in Juja, Kiambu county, alongside her male companion, was buried at her parent’s home in Mathioya, Murang’a county, yesterday.

Frida Warau Kamuyu (pictured) died after a vehicle she was in with 39-year-old Titus Kiiru plunged into the Titanic dam in unclear circumstances on January 18.

In an emotional send off, Kamuyu’s parents, close relatives and friends described her as an ambitious and bubbly young woman.

“Your love overwhelmed us with joy in our hearts, your presence filled us with joy and happiness. We loved you so much but you left us too soon,” read the tribute by her parents Chris Kamuyu and Grace Ruguru.

Her siblings termed her as their best friend who used to bring smiles to their faces every time she was around.

“We will keep the legacy of love and making others smile even when things go against their wishes,” read the tribute by her siblings.

Kamuyu’s sister Mary Wanjiru, who lives in Saudi Arabia, took to social media to ask for assistance to attend her sister’s burial.

Wanjiru said she went to the foreign country to earn a living and help educate her siblings with the hope of giving them a better future.

She, however, could not make to the burial due to logistical issues.

Kamuyu was born in 2000 at Kagwanja village in Kamacharia, Mathioya.

Diploma course

She enrolled at Kagwanja Primary School and later joined Butere Girls High School where she sat her KCSE exams in 2019.

She later joined Uzuri Technical Institute in Thika for a diploma course in hotel and catering and management where she graduated last year.

The eulogy indicated she died after she was involved in an accident.

Kamuyu’s body was identified at the City Mortuary on January 26, by members of her family, more than a week  after the incident.

An autopsy report indicated she died as a result of drowning. The report also indicated she had bruises on her left arm. Kamuyu and Kiiru died on January 17 when their Nissan X-Trail slipped into the dam.

Residents told the press that the dam is a popular recreational area.

Kiambu county fire and rescue employees told journalists that more than 50 bodies had been retrieved from the same dam since 2021.
