Kiambu MPs: Our farmers ought to reap big from Ruto government
Kiambu MPs are seeking ways to ensure the county reaps big from the Kenya Kwanza government.
The legislators say they want local farmers to get maximum guaranteed returns from their work.
Speaking on Saturday at Limuru Dairy Farmers Co-operative Society during its annual general meeting, the seven MPs who graced the event said they had formed a lobby— United for Kiambu — which they will use as a catalyst to achieve their goals.
They were hosted by local MP Kiragu Chege (right). They included Gabriel Gathuka Kagombe (Gatundu South), Alice Ng’ang’a (Thika Town), Kimani Wanjiku (Kiambaa),Gathoni Wamuchomba (Githunguri), Kiambu Woman Representative Ann Wamuratha, Senator Karungo Thang’wa and Kiambu County Assembly Chief Whip Nelson Munga.
Those who sent apologies included Mburu Kahangara (Lari), Kimani Ichungwa (Kikuyu) and Githua Wamacukuru (Kabete).
The MPs said that they would join hands with Governor Kimani Wamatangi and other elected leaders to push the government to promote crop and animal husbandry in the region so as to benefit from donor funds. “We want all our 12 constituencies to become municipalities so that we can angle ourselves to get donor funds and improve our road infrastructure, among other projects”, they said.
Kiragu said President William Ruto had assured leaders that all road projects initiated by his predecessor, Uhuru Kenyatta, would be completed before other projects were started.
“Nobody should lie to you that projects such as Mau Mau Road, Bathi and Ruiru Dam, among others, will stall. The President is committed to complete all of them as he has persistently said no new project will be initiated until the old ones are fully complete”, he said.
Gathoni said legislators would do everything possible to make sure that a law is enacted to zero rate all farm inputs. “We, as parliamentarians, will prevail upon the government to remove taxes on farm inputs in the next national budget”, she said.
Senator Karungo urged women and the youth to organise themselves in groups so as to benefit from the Hustlers Fund set to be launched in December by the President.
“Move fast and form legal groups. Be among the first people to get the initial release of funds”, he said.
During the event, a yoghurt making machine valued at Sh10m was commissioned. The facility’s board chairman, Njuguna Chege, said a machine that boosts the shelf life ofpacked milk would be installed soon.
The MPs unanimously called upon Kenyans and specifically ODM leader Raila Odinga to stop bashing the Ruto administration and instead give it time to implement it’s development agenda.
“There’s a lot of hope in the foreseeable future in matters development and its therefore prudent if leaders and the general popular can be patient with the President as he rolls out his development agendas” said Kiambaa MP.
