Old guard ‘happy’ to be back in changed House
A section of the old guard elected in the August 9 polls yesterday narrated how they would take time to adjust to the new Parliament.
Unlike the young and vibrant lawmakers, the old timers said the thirteenth Parliament would be very interesting for them as they will have to acclimatize.
The 13th Parliament will comprise fourteen old-timers, 29 women representing single-member constituencies, 12 young MPs, long-serving legislators, new MPs, members who ran unopposed and those living with disabilities.
Kilgoris MP-elect Julius Sunkuli said he was glad to be back after 20 years in the political cold. Sunkuli, who last represented Kilgoris Constituency between 1997-2002, clinched the seat on a Kanu ticket after defeating eight aspirants.
He had served in other high-profile positions in previous regimes, among them as Internal Security minister and Kenya’s ambassador to China.
“I was here as a boy of 30 years. Now I am heading to 60 years and I am back. I have seen the government of President Daniel arap Moi (deceased), who was keen on unity, that of the late Mwai Kibaki (who focused on the economy), and that of Uhuru Kenyatta. I have also been able to move around the world as an ambassador,” he said.
During yesterday’s orientation session, Sunkuli said he was amazed by changes in the chamber, such as new sitting arrangements and computer tablets mounted on the seats.
The former minister said he was looking forward to interacting with former colleagues in the Moi-era government, such as Daadab MP Farah Maalim. Equally eager to begin work is the new Kirinyaga Woman Representative Jane Maina.
