Africa champs KCB beat Kwanthanze in Machakos event
Reigning African Champions KCB kick-started the Machakos Open Mega Volleyball Tournament with a convincing 3-0 win against Kwanthanze Secondary School.
The Lionesses who are in pool B alongside Kwanthanze and Sasa Secondary Schools won three straight sets against the high-schoolers registering 25-20, 25-19, and 25-18 wins.
The tournament has attracted over 15 Volleyball teams with Seniors, secondary schools, and self-sponsored teams participating in the competition. They are competing for a Sh 50,000 cash prize and trophies.
Commenting on the team’s performance after matchday one, assistant coach David Kangaa said: “I am proud of the ladies for their performance today. This is our first competitive tournament after the African Club Championship in Tunisia. We have been training so hard and we hope we will win it.”
The competition enters the final day tomorrow.
and Kangaa has called upon his charges to work on serving. The team lost nine services in the first set of the game.
“We need to work on our services as a team. This is something we will do first thing tomorrow morning before we embark on the tournament,” said Kangaa.
Captain Lincy Jeruto expressed optimism with the squad alluding the competition provides an opportunity for the younger players to sharpen their skills ahead of the Kenya Volleyball League return.
‘Most of the senior players are away in Brazil with the national team. This tournament has then come in handy for the youngsters to also gain experience in the game in preparations for local and other competitions in the future,” said Jeruto.
Six KCB players; Mercy Moim, Sharon Jepchumba, Immaculate Nekesa, Edith Wisa, Magdalene Mwende and Belinda Barasa are currently with Malkia Strikers in Brazil for high-performance training ahead of the World Championships set for Poland and Netherlands in September.
